TB Skin Test ( Mantoux Test ) & Vaccination for Medical Students
What is the TB skin test (Mantoux test)?
When do I need to return after the TB skin test?
You must return within 48 to 72 hours after the injection for a healthcare provider to check the reaction and measure any swelling (induration).
What does a positive TB test mean?
A positive test indicates TB exposure or infection, not necessarily active disease. Further tests (e.g., chest X-ray) may be needed.
What happens if I miss the 48–72 hour window?
The test becomes invalid after 72 hours. You’ll need to repeat the test.
Can I get the TB skin test if I just had a vaccine?
Avoid live vaccines (e.g., MMR, varicella) 4 weeks before the TB test. If given on the same day, it’s okay.
What vaccines are required for medical students?
Most institutions require:
- Hepatitis B (3 doses + antibody titer)
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella – 2 doses or positive titer)
- Varicella (2 doses or positive titer)
- Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap) – booster within last 10 years
- Influenza – annually
- COVID-19 – per current guidelines
- TB test (Mantoux or IGRA) – upon entry and periodically
Can the TB skin test cause side effects?
Usually mild. Possible slight redness or itching. Severe reactions are rare.
